0 can also be specified with the flag -fast, while option -9 can also be specified with the flag -best, these are provided for backwards compatibility with older tools and should be avoided. The below example compares the differences between -0 and -9, as shown while -0 finishes much faster it compresses around 6% less (approximately 37mb more space ~]# time xz -0v linux-3.18.19.tarġ00 % 112.1 MiB / 553.9 MiB = 0.202 12 MiB/s 0:44ġ00 % 77.0 MiB / 553.9 MiB = 0.139 1.1 MiB/s 8:20 Using option 9 will take longer to complete, however you will have the largest amount of space saved. Using option 0 will complete faster, but space saved from the compression will not be optimal. The level of compression applied to a file using xz can be specified as a value between 0 (less compression) and 9 (best compression). This only works for files that have a known size, it will not work if you are piping content into xz. In the below example we are compressing the Linux kernel with xz with -v which is showing us the current percentage, compression ratio, MB/s, elapsed time and estimated amount of time until completion which is very useful information especially when compressing a large test]# time xz -v linux-3.18.19.tarĢ1.4 % 18.6 MiB / 118.6 MiB = 0.157 1.3 MiB/s 1:28 5 min 30 s The -v or -verbose flag can be specified to provide up to date information on a running operation. In this example, an xz copy of the Linux kernel has compressed to 14.4% of its original size, taking up 79.7MB of space rather than 553.9MB. Strms Blocks Compressed Uncompressed Ratio Check Filenameġ 1 79.7 MiB 553.9 MiB 0.144 CRC64 linux-3.18.19.tar.xz xz file such as the compressed and uncompressed size of the file as well as the compression ratio, which shows us how much space our compression is ~]# xz -l linux-3.18.19.tar.xz With the -l or -list flag we can see useful information regarding a compressed. Similar to example 3, it is possible to decompress a file and keep the original. To reverse the compression process and get the original file back that you have compressed, you can use the xz command itself or unxz which is also part of the xz package.īoth of these commands will produce the same result, decompressing to file.txt, removing the compressed file. The -c flag outputs the compressed copy of file.txt to stdout, this is then sent to, keeping the original file.txt file in place. This can also be done with the -c flag as below. You can instead keep the original file and create a compressed copy with the -k or -keep flag. Compress a single file and keep the original To instead compress all files within a directory, see example 10 below. This will compress all files specified in the command, note again that this will remove the original files specified by turning file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt into, and This will compress file.txt and create, note that this will remove the original file.txt file. We are going to cover 13 examples of xz here, showing you common tasks that can be completed and just how easy it is to use.Ĭheck out some of our other compression tool examples:īefore starting you will need to have the xz package installed, this is usually already installed by default, however you can install it now if required.ĭebian: apt-get install xz-utils Example XZ Commands With xz we will typically get a better compression ratio. Xz is another general purpose data compression tool with syntax similar to the older and more popular gzip and bzip2 options.

You’re using a specific example as an argument against a generalization, and then stating you have no interest in other examples that might go against your point. On one hand, you say there can’t be nuance due to it being a general concept, but then you want to focus on a specific example and toss aside any others that should be considered as well. My whole issue with the subject stems from the same base as your lack of interest, yet you made my argument in a way. Because what you see as a “gotcha” is what I see as looking deeper into what people do tend to generalize. The ending of your comment where you say you don’t care to partake in a “gotcha” moment is where I have the issue. I understand where you’re coming from with the Native American issue. Chinese guy dressing as a Slav in a track suit. People are quickly losing grip with the ability to think critically and use those nuances to be open and not so critical of each other. A pharaoh for Egyptian culture.įor me, this is an example of modern day reaction society throwing nuance out the window and making something often times done in a good natured way and with zero ill-intent and often none taken by those that matter, into a black and white issue.Īs an example of this reaction society, I wouldn’t doubt if someone reading this instantly pegs me as something I’m not and as someone that has a specific political affiliation that I don’t have. Same with a ninja, samurai, geisha girl for Japanese culture. dressing up as a race), but someone attempting to recreate what we’ve learned to be cultural attire (often beautiful) from the past. It’s not someone trying to look like a Native American living on a reserve in 2018 (I.e. For example, the Native American chief costume. But there are plenty of cultural “costumes” that get lumped into that category and IMO our reaction to it (usually white people playing SJW) is sometimes blown out of proportion. Just dressing up in a costume that tries to portray a race is bad. In Louisiana the inferior grade of Creole ponies are known as "tackies." In dress, anything that is tawdry is "tacky." A ribbon on the shopkeeper's counter, a curtain in the bolt, a shawl or bonnet, a bolt of cloth fresh from the loom may be "tacky," because it is cheap and yet pretentious. It is employed in describing persons of low ideas and vulgar manners, whether rich or poor. There are no aristocrats in the South now, and therefore no "tackies." No man who has the instincts of a gentleman is spoken of as a "tacky," whether he can remember the name of his grandfather's uncle or not. It is now nearly obsolete in both senses. It was coined by a wealthier or more refined and educated class for general application to those who were not sheltered by the branches of a family tree, who were "tainted." Those who were wealthy and yet had no great-grandfathers were "tackies." The word was used both in contempt and in derision. The word "tacky" is a Southern colloquialism. If you doubt that the concept of 'tackiness' even exists for everyone and outside of an exact context - feel free to elaborate this opinion as well. So, which criteria and/or definitions for 'tackiness' can you come up with? is that clothing can still be flashy (think of a three-piece pinstripes suit or a black leather double rider) without being tacky. The difficulty with this definition of 'tackiness' is, perhaps, that it overlaps too much with 'flashyness', while not being exactly the same. Here's my first attempt to approach a definition: t ackiness is when clothes force other people to look at them, notice and evaluate them and demand an emotional reaction - instead of giving them the choice whether they want to notice and care about it. It's easy to define tackiness as opposite to 'good taste' but since the pursuit of good taste is an eternal, never-ending endeavor, let's try to define tackiness by itself, without using other terms that are difficult by themselves. But why is that, which criteria does one subconciously apply when finding something tacky, or designing tacky clothes on purpose? Designer brands like Versace willingly allowed tackiness and played with the concept. Most would agree that, say, leopard print leather pants, graphic tees with nudity or excessive branding are tacky. But just as I often had difficulty understanding why I felt like that - what constituted this 'tackiness'? I've often stopped myself from buying certain clothes or disliked the outfits of others because of this sensation. Of course, I knew the sensation of finding something tacky very well. Tackiness in clothing always was a somewhat elusive and mysterious concept for me. This marks detailed surface features on planets, for example, Olympus Mons on Mars. You are on own I'm afraid, having to research what is getting in the way and determining if it can be turned off to make Stellarium work as described. If you're using a Mac, some shortcuts may be interfered with by OS and application global shortcuts. If you're on a laptop without a mouse, using a frustratingly annoying touchpad, you'll want to be comfortable with the supported gestures on the touchpad to simulate an external three-button mouse. It was Chris V using it in one of his Insider's Guide to the Galaxy talks that reminded me of it. Probably due to my non-plussed attitude on an early implementation of the oculars feature. But only today did I find out how to do it on the Mac.Īnd also, somehow, I had overlooked a shortcut associated with the oculars. I took that a step further and found his technique to work on all buttons associated with plug-ins. In Windows, he had randomly right-clicked his mouse on the Telescope Control plug-in to find it immediately opened the mount configuration window. Larry N, during a Stellarium level 2 intermediate training course in early July 2022, revealed a trick on a button in the horizontal toolbar. So I can confirm the operation of shortcuts for that environment too (which, in the end, is the same as Windows). If I'm lucky, there are no differences at all.Īlso, I have been using Stellarium 1.1 a good deal on the Ubuntu Linux OS. Therefore I believe this document should be relevant for current editions of Stellarium on Apple computers. All that said, I can't think of much that is different. That limited me to installing Stellarium version 0.22.1. Unfortunately, the Macintosh I have ready access to is running an old OS X, 10.12.x, which I cannot upgrade. Today, I wanted to update my keyboard and mouse shortcuts listing to the latest version of Stellarium 1.1. mark esk on Jam Track Central – Tom Quayle: Visualising The Fretboard.Admin on Yamaha – VOCALOID 6 v6.0.1 SE.Admin on Jam Track Central – Tom Quayle: Visualising The Fretboard.Admin on Jam Track Central – Master Classes and Special Selections.JXO Music on 91Vocals – UK Garage Vocals (WAV).imong mama on Splice Sounds – KARRA Presents: Heather Sommer Vocal Pack (WAV).Admin on Splice Sounds – KARRA Presents: Heather Sommer Vocal Pack (WAV).JXO Music on Roundel Sounds – Back To 80s Vol 1 (MIDI, WAV, SPiRE, SERUM). The result of that epic grinding fest can be seen on that picture: MC Alph is now Lv. And then, I was hooked for good, and I just couldn't stop for the life of me. I did so, and it was so painless and pleasant that I decided to add a couple more to the mix. At first, I grinded a dozen of levels then I wondered if I could grind a dozen more, just for fun. Heck, I'm sure you guessed what happened, dear fellow gamers. Combine this to the fact that the number of XP required to gain a level is precisely 100 and never varies, and you get the perfect set-up for a mammoth grinding marathon and a massive breaking of the game. That amount is 6 XP and it never gets any lower than that, even if your character towers at Lv. Not only that, but there is actually a minimum amount of XP given for killing a foe, regardless of your character's and the foe's levels. To put it simply, defeating strong foes gives too little XP and defeating weak foes gives too much XP. And since I wasn't sure how long Saki, Nikolai and Lucia would stick around, I decided that Alph would be the sole beneficiary of my grinding efforts.Īt first, I solely wanted to unwind and grind a couple of levels in a relaxing environment but things took a different turn after I fought a few battles and realized how unbalanced the XP gain dynamics were. That's when I decided to break the mold and treat myself to a bit of easy grinding by crawling back on the world map until I reached a free battle point where foes where so undelevelled that I could take them down in one hit. And given that Luminous Arc consists solely of battles with fixed screens and a bit of chatting in between, being sick and bored of said battles would have made the whole game pretty pointless. My fine quartet was overlevelled to some extent but that wasn't enough to ensure a smooth ride, and fighting was slowly but surely turning into a chore. Not only was I bored, but those cursed battles were harder than I expected. by using all characters and choosing the best fitted for the battle du jour. I then decided to play Luminous Arc as it was visibly intended, i.e. Why, oh why, game? I was seriously salty after that backstabbing move, not to mention anxious about whether I would manage to progress with such an unbalanced team fortunately, the game was kind enough to drop a couple of powerful characters into my party, allowing me to move forward without having to level-up my neglected party members. This worked nicely until the game viciously removed Heath from my party after a mere couple of chapters, leaving me stranded with a reasonably strong character and a bunch of under-levelled losers. My playthrough started in a fairly normal and unremarkable way: I fought a couple of battles, noticed right away that everybody but Heath and Alph sucked big time on the battlefield, and decided thus to focus the bulk of my level-grinding efforts on the aforementioned pair and to make them my main battle assets. And work for me it does indeed, o yes precious. This post is not about the awesomeness of the DS, but rather about how I broke, twisted and remodeled Luminous Arc's gameplay beyond recognition in an over-enthusiastic attempt to make the game work for me. Guess I should play DS games more often then - all the more so as my DS library is by a long shot the largest of all my game libraries. Boy, is it good to be reunited with my beloved DS at long last! It's been nearly a whole year since I played the system last, and the wave of giddy joy that washed over me as I rediscovered the DS' unmistakable graphical style and low-fi touch made me realize that I missed the system a whole lot. I tried some of the suggested fixes mentioned here and these haven't improved the problem for me. It appears in other applications as well such as Slack or Excel. I can't compare it to how it ran with Catalina because I ended up upgrading it to Big Sur almost immediately after I first set it up, but since then have noticed typing lag at all kinds of times. I've had the same typing lag with my MBP 16" that I got back in January. |
